The Carlo Goldoni Municipal Theatre
A nineteenth-century Italian-style theatre that has remained almost intact: woodwork, stucco, velvets and a painted ceiling that is worth the visit in itself. Every year the Goldoni Theatre hosts theatre seasons, concerts and festivals enjoyed by a wide audience.
The Carlo Goldoni Municipal Theatre was built between 1861 and 1869 to replace the old and no longer adequate Teatro del Sole Nascente, which had been constructed between 1736 and 1752 based on a design by Angelo Birza of Fabriano. The current structure was designed by Alessandro Pasqui of Florence, in accordance with the principles of the Italian-style theatre, though engineers Francesco Fellini and Achille Buffoni also contributed to the project.
Upon completion, the new theatre proved to be very spacious and functional. Based on Quagliani’s design, an ingenious mechanism was also installed to make the orchestra floor movable; it could be lowered for theatrical performances and raised to create a single stage with the proscenium for dance parties and masked balls. L’interno con platea, tre ordini di palchi e loggione, presenta eleganti decorazioni ed è impreziosito dal suggestivo soffitto dipinto. The interior, featuring the orchestra, three tiers of boxes, and a gallery, boasts elegant decorations and is embellished by a striking painted ceiling. A perfectly preserved 19th-century gem with its woodwork, stucco, and velvets. The theatre reopened in 2006 after extensive restoration; while it no longer features the mechanical devices that raised the orchestra floor or the stage machinery, it retains all its charm.
A visit to the theatre allows you to explore the stalls and the stage, admire the richly decorated ceiling, and then make your way through the box seats and the elevated foyer.
Every year, the theatre hosts a vibrant cultural program, featuring residencies, musical productions, extensive theatre seasons, children’s theatre festivals, and amateur theatre companies. A variety of personalities, theatre companies, and musical ensembles have graced the Goldoni’s stage over the years.
